We are a generation raised with games—whether it was the board games that accompanied our childhood or the triple-A blockbusters, PC titles or mobile games, all have become part of our worldview. Stimulated by frequent dopamine hits and instant rewards, immersed in the dazzling worldviews and intricate main and side quests of games, we look back at our real world and find it somewhat lacking.

If you, too, share this sense of regret and anticipation for our cities, now is your chance. Changping’s urban renewal initiative has entered its fifth year. After undergoing rigorous transformations such as industrial heritage revival, urban space curation, and high-end industrial replacement, Changping has decided to turn the entire city into a game board—designed by you, infused with a gamified worldview.

曾经的三角地公园,进阶成为小朋友学习可持续发展的大富翁棋盘;环菜市场的旧街区,变身为青年人打卡竞技的剧本杀现场;而10公里的骑行环线,也可以遍布着有趣的番外篇;游戏化的剧本,角色,竞技,制衡,美学,结合城市实体空间的烟火,店铺,地标,空间,人文,历史,肌理,将碰撞出全新的火花,为city walk 赋予全新的含义。
The former triangular park has evolved into a Monopoly board where children learn about sustainable development; the old neighborhoods surrounding the food market have transformed into script-murder venues for young adults to explore and compete; and the 10-kilometer cycling loop is now dotted with intriguing side quests. Gamified scripts, roles, competitions, strategies, and aesthetics, combined with the tangible liveliness, shops, landmarks, spaces, culture, history, and urban fabric of the city, will spark entirely new experiences, redefining the meaning of city walk.

We often say that urban renewal begins with the renewal of people. We look forward to seeing designers, artists, screenwriters, directors, and curators transform into game designers in this competition, overlaying a gamified layer onto our city. Let every visitor and resident become the ultimate player, let emotional value empower physical spaces, and let life experiences return to the streets. At the same time, we hope your game scripts and routes can bring renewed foot traffic to small street-side shops and draw social media attention to long-overlooked corners of the city. Where to go matters less than who you go with. Through gamified design, we aim to redirect people from online to offline spaces in need of engagement, enhance their experience and dwell time during city walks, and increase exposure and consumer conversion for businesses around the game zones. The ultimate pursuit of urban design lies in understanding human nature and optimizing resource allocation—and over the past 30 years, games have undoubtedly offered exceptional competitive strategies in this regard. This is a story born from the collision between “vibrant vitality” and “profound mission.” In May 2010, during a debate among young architects about the state of design talent in China, a pioneering and energetic organization—AIM (Architectural Mission)—was founded. AIM aims to identify outstanding talents among young designers through competitions. More importantly, we hope to inspire more young designers to reignite their passion and commitment to design, reflect on social responsibility and purpose, and actively engage in thinking and action.

AIM has always focused on the growth of young designers and the oftenoverlooked vulnerable groups in architecture amid social development. At the same time, it maintains strong collaborative relationships with governments, academic institutions, media, nonprofit organizations, design firms, designers, developers, and other stakeholders. Originating in Beijing, AIM is dedicated to providing the cultural and tourism industry with content and innovative talent that is adaptive, sustainable, productive, and growthoriented. Over 16 years, AIM has organized 38 competitions, gathered over 8,000 creative solutions, and impacted more than 1 million people—spanning architectural design, homestays, IPbased public art, cultural creativity, and more. Through continuous evolution, AIM has developed an innovative competitionbased model that replaces subsidies with awards and recruitment with contests. The STREET RELAY as the core brand of Changping's urban renewal efforts. During its 1.0 phase, a series of curated exhibitions were implemented along Government Street through a "competition + curation" model. STREET RELAY 2.0 now evolves from static exhibition-focused presentations to dynamic co-creation infused with gamified thinking!

We are calling upon urban tabletop game designers from all walks of life—urban planners, architects, curators, artists, and more—to become "city players." Through their creative designs, the city transforms into a giant tabletop game board, unlocking diverse ways to play. Even within the same neighborhood, new experiences and novel perspectives can be discovered.

Changping’s First Urban Renewal Gamified Scenario Design Competition!

昌平城市更新发展跳出传统框架,以游戏化策展激活城市空间为新玩法。让街道变成关卡、让空间变成场景、让游客与市民变成玩家,让城市变成舞台——让每个人都能在停留、行走、骑行中,感受昌平的文化脉络与现代活力。
Changping’s urban renewal initiative breaks free from traditional frameworks, embracing gamified curation as a new approach to activating urban spaces. Streets become levels, spaces turn into scenarios, visitors and residents transform into players, and the city itself becomes a stage—allowing everyone to experience Changping’s cultural heritage and modern vitality through staying, walking, and cycling.

Tabletop City • STREET RELAY 2.0

“街励”缘起:街励, 主题取自谐音“接力”,是昌平系列城市更新活动的接力和延续,将持续带动昌平街区城市更新。
The term “街励” (Jie Li) draws inspiration from its homophone “接力” (relay), symbolizing the continuity and relay of Changping’s urban renewal series. It represents an ongoing effort to drive neighborhood-level urban regeneration in Changping.

街励计划1.0——“昌流不息昌平城市更新新场景设计”竞赛鼓励参赛者结合“广义策展”思维,以城市街道作为展场,通过策展、装置设计、空间微改造等方式,重塑街道的趣味与活力。包含系列政府街策展优选作品的落地,联动策展人、设计师等组织快闪活动。
STREET RELAY 1.0 – “Endless Changping Flow: New Scenarios for Urban Renewal” encouraged participants to adopt a “broad curatorial thinking” approach, treating urban streets as exhibition spaces. Through curation, installation design, and spatial micro-interventions, the aim was to reinvigorate streets with creativity and vitality. This phase included the implementation of selected curatorial works along Government Street and organized flash activities in collaboration with curators, designers, and other stakeholders.

街励计划2.0阶段,本届以“桌游城市”为核心,推动城市更新从视觉焕新走向系统化参与式体验。我们发起“昌平城市美学与游戏化空间设计国际竞赛”,旨在将游戏机制与城市空间深度融合,引导参与者以游戏化思维与城市美学视角,回应真实城市议题,塑造兼具昌平气质与视觉美感的互动场景。
STREET RELAY 2.0 now centers on “Tabletop City,” shifting urban renewal from visual refreshment to systematic participatory experiences. We launch the “Changping Urban Aesthetics and Gamified Space Design International Competition,” aiming to deeply integrate game mechanics with urban space. Participants are guided to apply gamified thinking and urban aesthetic perspectives to address real urban challenges, shaping interactive scenarios that embody both Changping’s identity and visual appeal.

本次竞赛公开赛面向社会各界公开征集作品,参赛者需围绕昌平S、M、L三个尺度,提交融合昌平城市更新议题的游戏化策展设计方案。作品需体现趣味性、参与性,强调落地可行性,旨在通过创新设计激活城市空间。参赛者可通过竞赛官网报名,提交符合要求的设计成果,优秀方案将有机会落地实施。
This competition is open to the public, inviting submissions from all sectors of society. Participants are required to develop gamified curation and design proposals centered on the urban renewal themes of Changping, addressing the S, M, and L scales. Submissions should emphasize fun, engagement, and practical feasibility, aiming to activate urban spaces through innovative design. Participants may register via the official competition website and submit design deliverables that meet the requirements. Outstanding proposals will have the opportunity to be implemented.

本次竞赛邀请赛定向邀请骑行户外、银发友好、儿童友好等领域的重磅嘉宾参与,进行游戏化新场景设计。受邀者将结合自身领域专业优势,落地兼具专业性与创新性的游戏化策展方案,推动设计与产业协同发展。
The invitational track of this competition is specifically designed to invite distinguished experts from fields such as cycling and outdoor activities, age-friendly initiatives, and child-friendly environments to participate in the design of gamified new scenarios. Invited guests will leverage their professional expertise to develop executable gamified curation proposals that are both professional and innovative, thereby promoting synergy between design and industry development.
